Igor Mitoraj studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy in Cracow supervised – among others - by Tadeusz Kantor (1967-1968). Left Poland for France in 1968. Then studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In the mid seventies focused on the sculpture creating small bandaged heads and torsos. The series brought him to the spotlight of fame after the first individual exhibition in Paris (1976). Mitoraj works with the classic techniques carving in stone and bronze creating tiny as well as monumental sculptures. The artist refers to the classic Greek and Roman art legacy considering ancient times as the most valuable and inspiring in the art history.
